STYLE GURU BIO: Melissa Cavrell

Hi! My name is Melissa Cavrell and I’m so proud to be part of the CollegeFashionista Style Guru team! I’m a Public Relations major with a Political Science minor, from SUNY New Paltz. I can’t wait to get out on my campus and start showing what incredible trends there are here on our little campus!

I have been obsessed with fashion since I was a little girl. Some of my best childhood memories are of me and my grandmother cutting out pictures from The New York Times Fashion & Style section, and my mother always says I’ve been accessorizing since I was in the womb.

For as long as I can remember I’ve been fascinated by street style. Growing up in Manhattan, you see a swirl of styles around you every day. Business chic, artsy punk, classic elegance and modern sleek. Trends pop up, which at first glance look too daring to make it, but a week later hundreds of people will be traipsing around in the new “it” piece of clothing.

To me fashion is about expression and passion. A wise woman once said “Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening.”- Coco Chanel

I believe there are no truer words. That is why I enjoy walking my campus and looking at what people are wearing. Fashion is everywhere, and it speaks even when the wearer is silent.

Fashion is relevant to everything we do and is a medium through which we express ourselves. While we go about our daily lives, walking to class, reading a book, or texting our friends, fashion is happening all around us and turning our campuses into sprawling runways.
