STYLE GURU BIO: Melis Piroglu

Hello, Fashionistas/os! My name is Melis Piroglu. I’m majoring in Communication Studies and minoring in Business at Northeastern University. This fall, I will be a senior, and I’m hoping to find an internship for the spring. CollegeFashionista is a great opportunity for me to climb the steps of my future career in the fashion industry.

I grew up in Turkey living in two different cultures; Turkish and American. I have always enjoyed having the chance to learn from these cultures because they shape who I am. As I look back through my college years in Boston, I realize that I call Turkey home, nowhere else.

I love to travel (who doesn’t?) and this summer, I had the opportunity to explore Patmos, a small Greek island in the Aegean Sea. Believe me, this island is a must see! Besides the beautiful weather and the sea, I was amazed by the fashion. While everything is ridiculously expensive, you can see the reasons behind that. Most of the clothes that I looked at displayed hard work and you can understand how high the quality is.

I will be showing college street style from both Istanbul and Boston. Growing up in Turkey and going to college in Boston, I have had the chance to realize that fashion does change a lot depending on your location and I hope to show you what I mean with my posts.

I love pilates, exploring new places (in a weird way, especially islands) and fashion. So why not share what I see in two different demographics?

As for my style, I can wear whatever I feel comfortable wearing. I guess I wouldn’t say, “I would never wear that.” I can say that I’m obsessed with jewelry and accessories. I think that the easiest shopping is for jewelry because it takes less time to put it on and then take it off (a big issue). I sometimes find myself choosing my jewelry first and then getting dressed according to that jewelry.

With this style, I especially wanted to show the importance of the little black dress. As we all know, those little black dresses come to the rescue every time. I can wear this dress on a date, a night out with my friends or even to a wedding reception. I wore this look to a henna night, which is a traditional Turkish ceremony held for the bride before the wedding. The dress is from Topshop and the heels are from Zara. The look completes itself with H&M earrings and accessories from boutiques in Istanbul.
