I am a Wilfrid Laurier Communications student taking a semester off to work on a portfolio for Ryerson’s Fashion Design & Communications program. I currently work full time at an independent boutique in Toronto called Out On A Limb, doing sales and the ‘behind the scenes’ work in the stockroom and receiving shipments.
I have always had a passion for fashion and do not know what I would do in a world without fashion. I believe that fashion is an art, a game and a truly valuable form of personal and cultural expression. With ever-changing options, fashion is one of the easiest ways to let people know who you are and what you’re all about with a single glance. I dream of being surrounded by fashion for my entire life and building a successful personal image in the fashion industry. However, I am not yet exactly sure which aspect of the profession I would like most. I am interested in fashion journalism for a magazine like Nylon or Vogue, being a buyer for Holt Renfrew or a similar department store or a fashion photographer, to name a few. All the while I would enjoy creating my own clothing on the side.
I am never quite sure how to describe my personal style, but when asking friends and family they said “Chic and edgy, classic silhouettes with modern touches”. I am a sucker for studs, spikes, skulls, leopard and glitter and have been for at least six years now. But so is every young Fashionista these days. I like to mix these modern must-haves with vintage finds in my mother’s closet from her trips to Europe as a younger woman. Some of my style icons include Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, Rumi Neely, Kate Moss, Sienna Miller, Rachel Zoe, Elin Kling and Kate Bosworth. I am also inspired by people I see on the street and by fashion campaigns and magazine photographs. Recently, I have started sewing and have developed several items of clothing including a leopard micro-mini and a sleeping wear inspired satin and chiffon pastel pink crop top. I am currently working on an Oxblood coloured swing jacket with start studs on the lapel. I subscribe to many online fashion websites (including CollegeFashionista, of course) and read magazines and fashion coffee-table books to keep myself inspired and in the know.
I am photgraphed here while out with a friend in Yorkville, which is a great location in Toronto for Fashionistas and Fashionistos alike to see and be seen.
I am wearing my moms vintage tweed jacket from Ireland and her vintage leopard print sunglasses and a vintage ring. I incorporated some of my favourite trends with these leopard print Joe’s Jeans, Jeffrey Campbell’s spike platforms and H&M leather studded purse. Then I layered together an embellished collared classic button down with a graphic print cross knit sweater from Brandy Mellville and a leather moto jacket from ASOS. To top it all off I put on a slouchy black knit hat, used some Gosh nail glitter for statement nails that match my phone case and put my caffeine fix in my StarbucksxRodarte Ceramic travel mug!
I am so excited to be interning with CollegeFashionista as Wilfrid Laurier’s Fashionista/Fashionisto Spotlight reporter.
