STYLE GURU BIO: Megan Mathewson

Hi everyone, my name is Megan Mathewson, a junior Journalism and Political Science double major at James Madison University. I could not be more thrilled to have the opportunity to intern as a CollegeFashionista Style Guru this fall!

I grew up in a military family…a.k.a. I moved around A LOT. Thirteen times in the span of 20 years to be exact; I was even born in Canada! That being said, I have always been exposed to a variety of fashion, from very preppy to extremely edgy, inspiring me to develop my own unique style, and also the passion to constantly seek out new influences to continue to develop my wardrobe.

Although I do call Virginia my home, traveling between Northern Virginia and Harrisonburg, I am never content settling in one place. I love to travel, which has been wonderful to enrich my taste of style, but not so much for my bank account (college girl on a budget over here)!

To me, fashion is necessary because traveling around so much and having an active lifestyle requires pieces that can be dressed up or down, go from day to night and still look fabulous. Therefore, I like to take casual pieces as my base and pair them with accessories that can be changed out to create many different looks suitable for a variety of different settings.

I tend to be thrifty when shopping for my wardrobe. I make sure to utilize stores such as Marshalls or T.J.Maxx to find great deals. I am also an avid bargain hunter, so I sign up for basically every newsletter from stores I love, just in case a coupon pops up (Tip: American Eagle Outfitters has such great deals on basics, like my T-shirt dress). I am willing to spend more on versatile accessories like my Michael Kors tote, or these Express booties, just because I am more likely to wear them with other pieces to upscale my look. I never forget to leave the house without throwing on my Alex and Ani bangles to complete my ensemble.

I look forward to fall days and finding what this season has in store, both figuratively and literally.
