STYLE GURU BIO: Mary Hamula

Hey there! My name is Mary Hamula and I’m thrilled to be a Style Guru this summer for CollegeFashionista! I attend college at American University in Washington D.C., but I’ll be spending the summer in Atlanta, Georgia living at the Georgia Tech campus while interning.

At American, I’m a Public Communications major and heavily involved with the campus magazine, American Word. We’re the general interest magazine at American and we cover everything from politics to local D.C. events. I love working for American Word, as our topics are varied and we have such a diverse and talented team. We frequently write fashion pieces that feature students from AU and the latest trends.

My personal style has been years in the making. In high school, I always struggled to find what I wanted my style to be and fluctuated between a lot of different trends over the years. One year I owned nothing but Victoria’s Secret PINK T-shirts and the next I wore only black. But hey, high school is the time to evolve and grow right? Now, in college, I’ve started to find a more consistent style, but I still fluctuate daily. I religiously read style blogs such as Le-Happy or Self Constructed Freak for inspiration. I love punk and alternative fashion, and I often feel as if my style is heavily influenced by the ‘90s. I don’t know what I would do without flannel button-downs and distressed jeans! However, I’m interested to see how these two months in  Atlanta influence my style and I look forward to learning from those I meet.

Beyond fashion, I’m also a huge beauty nerd. I’m so excited that I’ll be able to write a few beauty articles this summer as well, as I love sharing my favorite tips and products with people. I have a lipstick collection that borders on problematic and I’m known for wearing winged black liner. I love watching YouTube makeup tutorials, and my favorite channel right now is Helen Anderson. She’s so lovely and her hair is amazing. Makeup is the perfect way to complete an outfit, and I love experimenting with makeup and trying out new styles just like I do with fashion.

I can’t wait to get started and take in all that Atlanta has to offer. My goal is to perfect my own personal style and to help influence the style of others. Looking forward to a fun summer!
