STYLE GURU BIO: Marie Recine

Hello! My name is Marie Recine, and I am an apparel design major at Oregon State University with a double minor in ethnic studies and Spanish. I keep busy at school by studying, playing lacrosse and working at the fashion magazine on campus.

I am from Mountain View, California, which is about 40 minutes south of San Francisco. It is close enough to everything I love and full of diversity. I love the beach—running along the shore and swimming in the ocean until I’m numb. I love the mountains—climbing rocks and off-road biking. It’s also fun to ride the train to the city for concerts, shopping, exploring or volunteering. Most often, I’d rather be outside than inside.

Another one of my favorite things to do is design and create dresses and gowns for fashion shows or my own closet. Formal wear is the most fun to make, but I also make casual wear, creative wear, bags and accessories. I can spend hours listening to music and hanging out with my dress form Geraldina. My designs have been inspired by seashells, Alaskan Ice cream shops, Oscar de la Renta and culture, among other things.

Different cultures and ways of life intrigue me. I love to immerse myself in an unfamiliar culture to explore different languages, customs, foods and beliefs. I have been to Mexico, Canada and the Dominican Republic and hope to have the opportunity to travel to many more places including Italy, Australia and Peru.

I have many looks, but my day-to-day style usually includes bright colors, exotic prints and soft materials. My outfit of choice would be a loose tank top, cut-off jean shorts and my Rainbow sandals. Living in Oregon, however, I have to adjust my style and add layers. I love this jacket from American Eagle Outfitters because I can wear it casually or with a nice skirt. The knit sleeves also make it more comfortable than the average denim jacket. My favorite boots are these brown rustic leather pair from Lucky Brand that can also be worn casually or dressed up.
