Hello! My name is Madeline Lacey. I’m a rising junior dual-majoring in Communication Studies and Psychology at The University of Michigan (Go Blue!). I’m very excited to be interning for CollegeFashionista this summer. I’ll be writing the ACCESSORIES REPORT column every Friday.
In my psychology classes, discussions always come back to the idea of “nature or nurture?” I’d like to think that my fashion sense was handed down to me by the fashion Gods, Lily Rousseau and Gianni Versace, at birth, but I have way too many incriminating photos from my childhood that would prove otherwise. I would say that I gradually nurtured myself into the fashion world. My mom tells me that she wanted her children to be creative by letting us choose our own outfits. I now understand why I see myself in so many ridiculous pictures, dresses in denim from head to toe. Nowadays, I’d like to think that my wardrobe has more of a J.Crew (15 percent off for all students!) slash Urban Outfitters slash whatever I can steal from my sister’s closet feel to it. I still rock the denim vest for special occasions, of course.
This summer my pictures will be taken on U of M’s campus in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The city is amazing, I mean how could you not love walking down the street and seeing such a variety of styles? We’re known for our thrift shops (…and $20 in our pockets), along with other popular stores. Whenever I bring visiting friends and family around campus, I always hear about how dressed up everyone looks. However, that is one of my favorite things about Ann Arbor. Our college is not in the middle of nowhere; we’re in the heart of a small city. We tend to dress to impress, and I certainly admire that. Everyone’s true fashion styles are emphasized because we are forced to stay away from the leggings, sweats and “normal” college town wear. Don’t get me wrong, I admit that I can get lazy in my fashion choices, but there’s a time and place for that, and luckily, Wolverines quickly learn that school is not the place for looking drab.
That’s enough about me and the lovely Ann Arbor for now. If you’re into the small things in life (i.e. accessories) like I am, I’ll keep you posted every Friday.
