STYLE GURU BIO: Madeleine Schlosser

Hello all my fashionable friends! My name is Madeleine Schlosser and I’m so excited to return for my fourth semester as a Tulane Style Guru. Last semester I had so much fun getting to write about my own outfits inspired by my favorite runway shows, while also getting to show all the stylish students on my campus. I can’t wait to see what opportunities this spring will bring.

I grew up in a small town in Connecticut where my style was sometimes seen as a bit out of place. For as long as I can remember I dreamed of going somewhere I’d be free to be myself and so I chose to go to school in the eccentric and diverse city of New Orleans. It has truly become a second home to me, especially after my family moved to Boston while I was away. On top of the amazing weather, food, music and art, there is an under-appreciated fashion scene. I’ve had the chance to volunteer at multiple NOLA Fashion Weeks. I have found unique boutiques and have spotted envy-producing street style all the time.

My style has evolved throughout my time writing for CollegeFashionista from observing my fellow Style Gurus, stalking new runway shows and searching for new blogs. When I’m not perusing online fashion sites, I’m looking to my surroundings to draw inspiration. I can look anywhere from the vibrant city of New Orleans to Costa Rica where I spent winter break or the winter mix in Boston. I often find myself a bit too fancy for most occasions (classes in particular), but I really just feel my best when I’ve taken time to look put together. Though I still have my athletic-wear days, I try to live by my favorite Oscar Wilde quotation: “You can never be overdressed or overeducated.”

Lately I’ve been gravitating towards minimalist looks like those on the blog We Wore What and have solidified black and white as my go-to color palate. However, my style changes daily and I do have occasional cravings for color, especially as summer comes around. Leather is like my second skin no matter the form: skirts, leggings, shorts or T-shirts, I’ve got it all. I usually pair an edgier leather piece with something more casual like a cotton bodysuit or oversized T-shirt. I’ve also been opting for white Keds lately over my usual heeled boots because they make power-walking to class a bit easier, though with my coffee addiction they aren’t staying white for long. For accessories I typically pick a statement necklace, big earrings or a floppy hat.

I’m looking forward to all the fashionable events happening this spring from sorority rush to Jazzfest and am so excited to share all the great looks I find. Check out my articles every Monday to start your week off with a little outfit inspiration!
