STYLE GURU BIO: Liam McGurl

September 2nd, 2015 at 2:10am

Greetings fellow binge-buyers. My name’s Liam McGurl and I’m, well, somewhat of a fashion mess. I would describe my personal wardrobe as a melody of “cafeteria clothing”—meaning that I’ve got a little bit of every style in my wardrobe. From day-to-day, my style’s constantly evolving, much like my chameleon personality.  I’m always trying out new things in both my personal and professional life, which leads to some pretty unique phases that I go through.

In reality, the only real consistency in my clothing has been my undying love for neutral colors, especially black. Whether I’m throwing on a pair of black combat boots, a grey button-down, or a beige sweater, there’s a whole lot of neutral in everything I wear.  Likewise, the only consistency in terms of my hobbies has been photography—which has grown from being a niche of mine to a self-run photography business, “Liam McGurl Photography.”  Needless to say, CollegeFashionista was the perfect marriage of my two loves: fashion and photography.

I hope you all take something out of my upcoming posts, whether it’s some useful style advice or a chuckle at my, sometimes, unbearable sense of humor. Also, just as a precursor for my posts to come, one of my stylistic beliefs is that the best way to stand out is to utilize simple, understated pieces.  So, I hope to show the power of simplicity in some of my posts.

For this look, I stuck to my usual ways, wearing mostly neutral-colored articles—such as this black zipper T-shirt and these brown Kenneth Cole combat boots.  Here, what makes the overall look stand out is cut, rather than color.  This loose, draping top is paired with dark-wash skinny jeans, to make this edgy top the focal point of the look; it’s a nice way to express your style without all those crazy patterns and colors.

Aside from these main pieces, I’d be letting myself down if I didn’t allow a moment to talk about my new hairstyle.  This cut allows for a bit more wiggle-room in terms of matching your hair with your day-to-day style— and I love it!  A heavier-holding gel in the morning will provide a more slicked-back look, perfect for attire such as this.  On the other hand, a quick run-through with some mousse and a few minutes of blow-drying will give a more toned-down look.

Being diverse in your style is a great thing, because it allows you to dress for every occasion or mood you might find yourself in. While dramatic pieces are fun, it’s important to keep in mind that they won’t always be appropriate for every situation.  So, make sure to have some simpler, more classic articles outside of your personality pieces.

Overall, the most important thing is to have confidence in the clothes you wear.  There’s no better way to do this than dressing to match your personality.  The outward should reflect the positivity inward, so look for those items that bring your personality to life when shopping!

I hope my following posts help you all find some new style’s that make you both look and feel your best!  If you ever have any questions or comments, don’t hesitate to contact me via my social media accounts—I’m friendly, despite all these dark colors!
