STYLE GURU BIO: Laura Palombi

Hello all you beautiful Fashionistas/os! My name is Laura, and I hail from Vancouver. I am an upcoming sophomore studying Marketing at the University of British Columbia. Ever since I came to college I started to notice the amazing style students would wear around campus. Every time I saw a girl with an edgy jacket or a guy with a funky shirt, I had the sudden urge to grab them and ask if I could take their picture.

I love to take bits and pieces of each person’s look and incorporate them into my own style. That is why I love CollegeFashionista; it is the perfect outlet to express all my creative clothing inspirations and have everyone I share it with be inspired as well. As a busy college kid, I always wonder how it is possible that so many students have the energy to dress so amazingly. I feel that is where most of the inspiration for my personal style comes from—the confident and bold ways students can express themselves even if they are running around campus on a deadline! I know I am, that’s for sure.

Like many of us Style Gurus around the nation, I think that my style is very versatile, as it changes by whatever I am inspired by. Lately, I’ve been very into ’90s fashion, especially with music artists like Aaliyah or TLC, but if you drop Vogue on my desk, that could all change tomorrow. That’s what I love about the fashion world— you can be anyone you want to be.

This is actually my first year in Vancouver. Before that, I lived in Colorado and grew up in the Netherlands. For most of my life, I’ve been very fortunate to be educated on the art world and was encouraged to be as creative as possible. Being an artist was my transition into fashion. I went from collages to sewing and drawing and now to writing! I just love that there is so much you can do with it. I spent the summer of 2014 at the Otis College of Art and Design, where I studied fashion. There, I discovered my main influences to be Y’s Yves Saint Laurent, Alexander McQueen and artists like Raoul Dufy and Gustav Klimt.

What I am wearing today is a dress in seagrass, Vince Camuto booties (I love the edgy studs) and a Forever 21 cuff. I always appreciate a pop of color in my look and always try to bring a slight edge to it. I’m extremely excited to connect with all you Fashionistas/os out there, and I hope you will stay inspired and expressive in the world of fashion.
