My name is Kelly Martin and I’m a sophomore at the University of Alabama with a major in Apparel Design and a minor in Art History. When I’m not going to class or working, I like to spend my time drawing, reading fashion magazines, riding horses, hanging out with friends, watching old movies and shopping of course!
I’m still finding my distinct style, but I love anything that’s bright, patterned and I can definitely appreciate something with sparkle. Some of my favorite places to shop are Gap and Ann Taylor Loft for staple pieces, and Urban Outfitters, small boutiques and online retailers to find more unique pieces.
I get style inspiration from absolutely everything. Movies are one of my favorite resources; you become totally immersed in someone’s life and the ways the characters dress reflect their status, mood and era the movie is set in. Some of favorite fashion movies are Marie Antoinette, Sabrina, The Devil Wears Prada, Clueless, The September Issue and A Hard Day’s Night. And then there’s the Internet. I could spend hours scrolling through blogs like Sea of Shoes, JAK & JIL, HANELLI, The Man Repeller and of course, CollegeFashionista. It’s really fascinating to see how other people interpret the trends in real life that you see on the runways and magazines.
I feel that my style is always changing and evolving. I’m so excited to be able to share my point of view as well as the great style of my fellow students at the University of Alabama! I love CollegeFashionista because it’s a way to see great fashion from students who aren’t necessarily models, which makes me think, “If they can wear that, I can too!” I hope through my pictures and articles some of y’all are inspired to try something new you didn’t think to try before.
