My name is Kelli O’Brien and I am currently a junior at the beautiful Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana. I am majoring in Journalism with minors in Business Entrepreneurship and Apparel Merchandising.
I grew up on the south side of Chicago completely oblivious to fashion. Basketball ran my life, which explains my go-to outfit of sweats and a ponytail. English was my strong subject in high school, and by my junior year I had developed a fascination with fashion magazines. The glossy pages explore a fairytale world of design, photography and, most importantly, fashion. During my senior year, I took a fashion and interior design class, which really opened the door to the possibility of having a future in the fashion industry.
Photo shoots from my favorite magazines, which include Teen Vogue, Glamour and Nylon, cover the walls of my room to provide me with style inspiration as well as to challenge my personal style. The world of fashion is ever changing with new trends arriving every season. I’ve built my wardrobe around staple pieces with a bohemian flair that I can build in trendy pieces if they so fit my body type. In my opinion, it is crucial to remember that these trends are simply that; short-lived fads that, by the time most people catch on, are already over. It does not benefit any Fashionista/o to adopt a fad that does not highlight his/her best features. Fashion is the art of self-expression; therefore, I believe you should only adopt trends that describe you. And, if you really rock that trend, there’s no reason you can’t keep it in your wardrobe for the long run either. My absolute favorite trend right now is infinity scarves—they can be worn during any season and add that extra stylish touch to help complete your look. Plus, you don’t have to worry about one end of your regular scarf getting longer than the other or the knot coming undone.
I credit the film, The Devil Wears Prada and Meryl Streep for truly establishing what I’d like to do in my future. Being the editor of a fashion magazine would allow me to combine my love of English and fashion editing. Being able to contribute to CollegeFashionista is the perfect introduction for a young journalist to combine writing and fashion. This spring I’ll be contributing to the LET’S HEAR IT FOR THE BOYS column every Tuesday. I cannot wait to start sharing my fellow Hoosier Fashionisto’s style with you all!
