STYLE GURU BIO: Katie Alston

Hey there! My name is Katie Alston and I’m a Pre-Apparel and Pre-Merchandising Management major at Oregon State University and I’m working on a double minor in Photography and Writing.

I actually decided last minute to pursue an education in the fashion industry. I’m so glad I did, and even more glad that I decided to do it here in little Corvallis, Oregon. I’ve found that there’s more diverse fashion in the small college town streets than I’ve seen in some larger cities. I’m constantly intrigued and inspired by my peers and the fashion they bring from their respective hometowns and countries.

Growing up, it seemed like my mom’s best friend was her sewing machine. From a very young age, I remember her sewing my brothers and I anything from Halloween costumes to stuffed animals. Not to mention all the hemming and patching surgeries she performed on the clothing we wore so aggressively. Her expertise in this department was always something I found fascinating. Threads, bobbers, needles, fabrics and buttons became familiar to me and quickly I picked up the trade myself. Since I never quite lived up to my mom’s level of sewing proficiency, I shifted my focus to design and merchandising. My love of fashion stayed unwavering, however, and I can’t seem to get enough of it!

Aside from fashion and merchandising, I also enjoy hiking and exploring the outdoors with my friends, finding the most delicious coffee I can find, petting literally every dog I see, playing my trombone in the Oregon State University marching band, writing stories, taking pictures of everything and anything and watching entire seasons of TV shows on Netflix by accident.

I’m so excited to be a brand new Style Guru Intern this summer and I can’t wait to see where it takes me. Keep an eye out for my posts every Thursday!
