STYLE GURU BIO: Katherine Lavacca

Hello beautiful people! My name is Katherine Lavacca and I am a senior majoring in English with a minor in Journalism at the University of Tampa. This is my first semester writing for CollegeFashionista and I couldn’t be more excited to dive into the vast world of fashion writing. Summer is in full swing here in Florida and I’m looking forward to featuring all of the beach ready looks and tropical trends.

When I was younger I couldn’t get enough of Stacy and Clinton’s cheeky, but helpful, style advice on What Not To Wear, and I spent a good amount of time keeping up with the current America’s Next Top Model cycle. Ever since then I try to channel my own creativity into stylishly affordable outfits. I admire the avant-garde looks that come down the runways during fashion week and would love to purchase pieces that grace the pages of Vogue and Hapar’s Bazaar, but that’s not exactly obtainable on a student’s paycheck.

Thankfully, Tampa is home to a multitude of thrift stores and consignment shops that hold patterned gems and an unlimited supply of bargain denim. I love the little bubble of excitement that comes with finding a one of a kind piece that lends its own character to the outfit.

The multi-colored button-up I’m wearing today was bought at a local thrift store in South Tampa. Known for its high scale living, South Tampa is a treasure trove for barely worn designer clothing! Although this particular button-up is slightly larger than what I’d normally wear, it acts as a perfect throw over to keep the sun off my neck and shoulders. Sandals are a must for Florida, and are best when bought first hand for happy, healthy feet during the summer.

I can’t wait to start featuring all of the Fashionistas/os in Tampa that know how to rock the old with the new in order to create fresh summer looks! I also hope to inspire you to check out your local thrift stores and bargain shops for that unique piece that brightens your day and your wardrobe.
