STYLE GURU BIO: Kate Young

Hello all college Fashionistas/os! My name is Kate Young, and I am a senior at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. I am studying Spanish and Nursing, and I am hoping to pursue a career as a Nurse Practitioner. This is my first time writing for CollegeFashionista, and I am unbelievably excited!

I am from Green Bay, Wisconsin, a city most people only recognize because of the Packers. Sitting outside during winter games at Lambeau has taught me to dress in layers, layers, layers! Every Midwesterner knows how cold winters can get, but I love burying myself in big sweaters, cute coats and chunky scarves in the (sort of) big city of Milwaukee during blustery days. However, Wisconsin weather does influence my style all year ‘round. In one day, the weather could go from 70 degrees and sunny, to 50 degrees and rainy—you always need to be prepared!

When I’m not in school, I love antiques and interior decorating. Two of my most prized possessions are: a gilded ornate oval mirror with carved golden flowers (from my Great-Grandmother Evelyn), and a recently acquired maroon 1950s Corona typewriter that my Grandma Judy used in high school. My love of antiques translates a lot into my personal style. I love classic shapes and prints: pencil and A-line skirts, polka-dots and Breton stripes, trench coats and ballet flats, lots of black and white with slight pops of color. I particularly enjoy finding accessories that are vintage or secondhand to use as accents in my outfits.

In this outfit, I paired a Gap striped boat neck T-shirt with an on-trend black midi skirt with very loose pleats. To prevent the outfit from looking drab, I donned a pair of red suede Steve Madden pumps. For some vintage flair, I included a secondhand Coach briefcase that I use as a backpack during the school year; it is adorned with a retro colorful scarf that once belonged to my mom (sorry for stealing it, mom!) My bejeweled earrings pop against the neutral colors in my top. On my wrist is the one thing every college student absolutely needs—a watch! My brother gifted me this gorgeous rose-gold Fossil watch for my 21st birthday.

This semester, I will be writing on all sorts of different styles, from classically feminine, to grunge, to tribal, to boho, to sporty! Milwaukee is a diverse city, and I am excited to share my campus’ style with you!
