STYLE GURU BIO: Karisma Dorsey

Hello Fashionistas/os ! I’m Karisma Dorsey and this is my second semester as a Style Guru. I am excited to continue sharing my journey from Baltimore to Bowie State with you. My first semester as a Style Guru brought me many lessons and exciting opportunities. I have become more creative with my social media posts and it’s caught the eye of one of my idols, as well as the CollegeFashionista team ! The fall semester has brought many changes,so it’s only right that my style reflects this evolvement.

I have always mixed menswear into my wardrobe, like my dad’s baseball caps, thrifted men’s blazers and flannels. Juxtaposition has been a style staple that I have rediscovered. Gaining inspiration from celebrities like Janelle Monae, this outfit made me feel sassy and confident. My shoes were the focal piece in this look, I love oxfords ! Again, juxtaposition is key here. I’ve paired my black and white oxfords with light wash jeans and a leather jacket. Just like everyone else this year, I was inspired by the movie Clueless and paired my white button-up with a cropped green sweater. Since taking a course in fashion history, I’ve started to look into movies and television shows for sources of inspiration.

None of my looks are complete without my favorite accessories: my curly afro and stiletto nails. Embracing my natural curls is the greatest style step I’ve taken. There’s something enticing about big, wild hair that I just love. It elevates even my most minimal looks. Playing with new and different hairstyles I’ve found that this is one accessory that will never be off-trend.

Coming from Baltimore, I still incorporate my city girl attitude into my looks. This shows when I mix and match chic and comfortable pieces. It’s one skill I’m happy I’ve mastered. I can wear one look all day going from class to meetings, and transfer it over to night with little effort. This semester is sure to bring tons of inspiring looks from the runway to campus. I look forward to reporting all that Bowie State has to offer.
