STYLE GURU BIO: Jessica Petersen

Hi, Fashionista/os! My name is Jessica Petersen and I’m so excited you clicked on my page. I have recently been faced with the dreaded task of moving my closet from Miami University back into my home in the Northwest suburbs of Chicago for the summer. It’s safe to say the days where my vacant room’s carpet was visible are a thing of the past. Unfortunately, Miami is not the university located in Miami, Florida, but instead is the university found in Ohio that has given me a freshman year I wouldn’t trade the world for (even if I did not leave with a tan).

Growing up, I dabbled in many potential passions ranging from dance to soccer and even to arts ’n’ crafts for a hot second. I think my family and I came to a unanimous decision that none of these were the right fit for me after it was discovered that I was more excited about the dance costumes than the choreography, ran away from soccer balls during games, and permanently coated the house in glitter after every ‘big project’. The one consistent thing in my life that seemed to bring me happiness was a computer game known as Barbie Fashion Show.

Before you begin to close my page with a click and an eye roll at the idea of my childhood passion being a computer game released in 2008, please allow me to elaborate. Whether I was sitting through a dance lesson or grueling soccer practice, the light at the end of the tunnel in my ten year old self’s world was always the thought of being able to start up my family’s PC to design a line of clothes with Barbie. The idea of being able to express myself through the right combination of accessories was something that stuck with me through middle school and now to college as I discover who I really am.

I would describe my style today as classic chic with a twist. Neutral colors fill my closet like Urban Decay’s Naked palette, yet I also enjoy having a bold statement piece in most outfits I wear. As one of Carrie Bradshaw’s biggest fans, I love being asked the question, “Where did you get those shoes?” more than anything. I feel that the goal of each outfit is to represent my personality and I enjoy having the opportunity to do so everyday.

Overall, fashion is the best form of self-expression in my life and I can’t wait to be a part of the CollegeFashionista summer internship program this year! I’m so excited to see where the world of fashion leads to this summer.
