STYLE GURU BIO: Jessica Menendez

Hey there, Fashionistas/os! My name is Jessica Menendez and I’m currently a sophomore at Florida International University. This will be my first time as a Style Guru for CollegeFashionista and I’m SO excited to share my view of fashion with you all.

Fashion hasn’t always necessarily been a direct part of my life. Growing up, I went through many different stages. I had the tomboy stage, the rocker stage and the “I hate pink” stage. It wasn’t until I started to get older that I finally started to give the fashion world a chance. I traded in my dirty Converse and bermuda shorts for little sundresses and a cute pair of flats. Now that I’m eighteen years old, I can’t imagine a time when fashion wasn’t a part of my life. I spend hours searching through fashion bloggers Instagrams, I use Pinterest religiously and my makeup game gets stronger with every YouTube video that I watch.

I’ve never kept up with the latest fashion trends and I’ve never paid much attention to what everyone else is wearing. When it comes to fashion I live by one rule: wear whatever makes you happy. Although I’d consider my overall style to be relaxed and simple, I wear whatever I’m in the mood for. My closet is filled with ripped jeans and graphic T-shirts, colorful bikinis and cover ups and elegant blouses and dresses. When it comes to shopping, I always look for the basics—the simpler the better. I’ve never been into patterns, extremely bright colors or very “loud” pieces. When it comes to my wardrobe, makeup and accessorizing, I don’t like to overdo it. I keep my makeup very subtle, light and natural. To accessorize my outfits I wear simple watches, rings or bracelets and use one of my many kate spade purses. I feel like style should enhance natural beauty—not conceal it.

Although it took me a while to learn to love fashion, I have loved photography and social media for as long as I can remember. To say I’m obsessed with Instagram and taking photos would be an understatement. If it’s not my iPhone camera that I have in hand it’s my professional Cannon or my Polaroid. When I’m not out and about snapping pictures of Miami’s cutest spots for my Instagram, I’m working and crafting for my online Etsy shop: Sunshine with Jess. I’d definitely considering myself the artsy type and I take pride in my creativity. I spend way too many hours doing DIY crafts from Pinterest, staging my own photo shoots and designing new merchandise for my shop.

I’m so excited to explore all the opportunities that CollegeFashionista will offer me. Follow along with my adventures as I take on the fashion world.
