STYLE GURU BIO: Jenny Gray

Hello, fellow Fashionistas/os, I’m pumped to be joining you this summer as a Style Guru. My name is Jenny and I am a rising junior at Cornell University, studying urban and regional studies (URS). URS consists of learning the ins and outs of cities, and for me, that includes street style!

I grew up on the north shore of Chicago, where all the John Hughes movies happen to take place. (Bonus: Sixteen Candles took place at my high school). To say the least, I’ve had a pretty classic American teenage upbringing. That being said, my family was on the lower-middle class end of the economic spectrum, so I had to get creative to fit in with my wealthier peers. I frequented thrift and vintage shops curating a wardrobe that includes pieces from Topshop to Prada. I browse eBay for deals and like to swap clothes with my friends.

My style could be described as classic with an edgy twist. I love wearing delicate feminine pieces alongside leather and more industrial accessories. For my prom, I actually wore a thrifted red silk slip dress topped off with my leather jacket! I love experimenting with my look, whether it be dying my hair (it’s been silver, violet and pink), or making my own custom jewelry.

In my free time, I like visiting museums, playing guitar and checking out the latest in music. I’m inspired by it-girls Alexa Chung and Kate Moss, rock-chicks Patti Smith and Courtney Love and the ultimate bombshell: Brigitte Bardot.

I keep my look minimal for day-to-day wear, usually throwing on some well-worn jeans, a basic T-shirt, a cool jacket and some chunky shoes. For the summer, I picked out a pair of embellished western mules, which go quite well with an assortment of outfits. I think beauty can play a huge role in appearances as well, so I take care of my skin (Glossier is one of my favorites) and am a big fan of winged eyeliner and a nude lip.

I’m so excited to work with such a wonderful team of fashion lovers!
