STYLE GURU BIO: Jasmeet Kaur

Hi everyone! My name is Jasmeet Kaur, and I’m a freshman at DePauw University. I was born and raised in India, and I only moved to the US last August. This is my first semester as a Style Guru for CollegeFashionista, and I am so excited to finally have a creative outlet to share my love for fashion! My entry into the style blogosphere has been most influenced by fashion powerhouses, Anna Wintour and Suzy Menkes. Besides fashion, I enjoy art, music, quaint little coffee shops with marble tables, and scouring through pages of Vogue in said coffee shops.

I don’t have a very precise answer to the frequently asked question–“What’s your personal style?” My aesthetic leans slightly more towards the insouciant Parisian style. My fixation on silhouette draws me back again and again to the dramatic and architectural pieces we often spot on Parisians. My style is most inspired by (surprise, surprise) French icons like Brigitte Bardot, Charlotte Gainsbourg and Caroline de Maigret with their undeniable je ne sais quo. My wardrobe remains stubbornly neutral with a distinct emphasis on monochrome. I refuse to part with my blue denim and my recently acquired leather jacket. I believe that a great leather jacket has the power to transform one’s life.

The only makeup I wear on a daily basis is a nude lipstick although I can never say no to a good cat eye. Having never had a haircut in my life, my long tresses are almost always in a messy bun or chic low chignon to keep them out of my way. The (only?) advantage of having Rapunzel-like hair is the ability to experiment with all kinds of braids. But on most days, I stick to the true Parisian just-out-of-bed hair.

This flirty little skirt with a black turtleneck tucked in is one of my closet essentials. This skirt is a refreshing take on the iconic American Apparel tennis skirt. The sheer fabric of the skirt is perfect for a little swish-swish–what’s not to love? I swear by the timeless black turtleneck which has been an indispensable part many iconic wardrobes from that of Audrey Hepburn to Steve Jobs. This outfit seamlessly transitions from day to night. Pair it up with an over-sized denim jacket and some Adidas Superstars, and you’re ready to run errands. Throw on a leather jacket, and you’re ready for dinner with your girls.

At a mere 5’2”, I can never say no to a good heel. These dupes of the Jeffery Campbell Litas have block heels that jazz up an outfit without painful swollen feet. As a minimalist, I like to keep my accessories simple. Obsessed with all things rose gold, I instantly fell in love with this delicate ring pendant.

I hope you will enjoy my little space on the interweb and follow along on my journey with fashion on all my social media. As Bill Cunningham very rightly said, “Fashion is the armor to survive the reality of everyday life.”
