STYLE GURU BIO: Irina Hernandez

Hello friends! This summer I am super excited to be an official style guru here at CollegeFashionista. I can’t wait to share some amazing outfits, advice, trend reports and general fashion styling awesomeness with you all. Before we jump into the fun, let me tell you a little bit about myself, my style and why I am here.

Defining myself has always felt like quite the ordeal. Perhaps it’s because my life is a combination of myriad interests. Music, fine arts, fashion, interior design, philosophy, puppies, writing, Twin Peaks—the list really does go on and on. From thinking about whether or not human life has any inherent meaning, to getting way too into a documentary about insects, to dancing to old Beyoncé songs in my underwear, to scaling a cliff in my local state park—my mind tends to be all over the place.

One thing I’ve been able to narrow down is that I am an extremely creative gal with a sharp eye for good design. Usually, visual balance and harmony are the two main things that I look out for in any given context, rather than my own personal taste. I may prefer neutral tones and minimal looks on myself, yet an energetic and colorful outfit filled with different textures, patterns and colors will satisfy me just as well if it is proportional, coherent and, above all, fun. I often take on different stylistic personas on a day-to-day basis and I am totally open to different looks!

I think that my wide array of interests contribute heavily to my personal style. For example, I love ’80’s heavy metal and will incorporate a T-shirt from my favorite band into an Audrey Hepburn-inspired look featuring cigarette trousers and a ladylike handbag. Or I could throw on my pair of vintage Dr. Martens to give a grunge-y finish to a modern and minimal combination of slim black trousers and simple white T-shirt. I’m a firm believer that no two styles are too far apart to combine, mix and match and create something uniquely beautiful.

Here, I was sporting a cozy linen top over a simple romper and completed the relaxed bohemian vibe with my favorite go-to pair of Birkenstock sandals.

I hope to expand both my own stylistic outlook this summer and bring some of my findings to you.
