Hey, everyone! My name is Imani Lewis and I will be covering the summer styles of the University of Maryland. As a Communications major in the Public Relations track, I’m totally pumped to connect with students and discover how they individually represent the University’s fashion scene. Plus, writing for the WHAT TO WEAR column gives me the unique opportunity to find out where people are going and what they’re wearing on our huge campus.
Now, for a little background about myself. My love of fashion is strong, but my approach to fashion is quite atypical. I refer to myself as a self-proclaimed “fashion nerd” because I study my fashion like I study for exams.
My obsession with clothing began when I was a young girl. Throughout my middle school and high school years, I spent all my time researching designers, all of their collections and practicing my runway strut… in the living room. I wanted to know the fashion industry inside and out. I wanted to find out the best ways to artistically express myself through clothing. Fashion was a huge part of my life and continues to play a major role.
As I grew older, I learned new things about fashion that I never grasped before. I began to understand how fashion serves as a language, as well as a personal expression. I learned how trends are born. I began to recognize how different brands speak to a person’s passions and interests.
I think my greatest realization is understanding the misconception of the relationship between style and brands. I became aware of the fact that owning the brand name clothes doesn’t necessarily make you a Fashionista/o. It is the way that clothing is styled that makes someone fashionable. Once I put this ideal into practice, I began to branch out of my comfort zones, visiting boutiques, thrift stores and anywhere else, searching for pieces that fit my own style aesthetic.
Now, as a senior in college, I am able to look back at those times and recognize the gravity of the lessons I have mastered. I hope to learn, study and share more about fashion with all my fellow Fashionistas/os in the next few months.
