My name is Hannah Julien, I am 21 and I will be a senior at The Ohio State University this fall. This summer however, I will be reporting to you from my hometown of Boston. For the past three years I have been studying Fashion and Retail Merchandising and learning about how the fashion industry works, all the while falling more in love with it. I am very excited to come on board with CollegeFashionista this summer and write the WHAT TO WEAR column every Thursday.
To me, fashion is all about self expression. I spent this past spring semester studying in London at the London College of Fashion. Having the opportunity to be immersed in British culture has definitely given me a new view of fashion and how people express themselves through how they dress. I am a big proponent for dressing for yourself and no one else. Although it is difficult at times, I try very hard not to concern myself what other people think about how I dress. You have to look good to feel good!
Most of the time you can find me dressed in all black, with a little army green thrown into the mix, maybe. I would describe my style as a mix of urban, rocker and minimalist, but there are always exceptions to be made. I mainly dress in basics: solid tanks, striped tees and black jeans. I definitely own at least seven pairs of black skinny jeans. I pretty much live in my Steve Madden combat boots and white Converse sneakers. As of last summer, I am a HUGE fan of all things high-waisted, I probably have at least eight pairs of high-waisted shorts in my closet right now.
Growing up, I was always encouraged to make or alter my clothes to create something new and one of a kind. “You can definitely make that!” has been a common phrase used in my household for as long as I can remember. I certainly would not call myself a fashion designer by any means, but I do make all of my own jean cut-offs, refashion most of my headbands and I even made a few high school prom dresses.
Needless to say, I have been a Fashionista since day one. My parents never could pull me away from my dress-up box. I am the friend that dishes out fashion advice, the one that is asked for help with every shopping trip and I hold the answer to the eternal question: “How does this look?”. When it comes to fashion, I feel honesty is always the best policy. In London, I completed a styling program which advanced my knowledge base and really reinforced my desire to one day become a stylist.
I am excited to keep you up to date with all of the unique fashions I find being showed off in Boston over the next few months!
