My mood almost always depends on what I’m wearing. That is why I have always been the one who dresses up for everything. Since I was a little girl, my philosophy has been to dress like I have somewhere better to go later.

I have been given my fair share of grief from people throughout my life regarding my need to dress up. I can recall doing things as simple as going to the movies with my family and nearly making us late because of my inability to decide what outfit to wear. I always hear phrases like “There’s no need to get dressed up,” or “We’re not going anywhere important!” But to me, every place I go is important, along with everything I wear. My body is a sacred canvas and the clothes are the paint.

It’s hard to put a label on my personal style, because it varies every day. If I feel like wearing a dress one day and a T-shirt the next day, that is what I do. That is what I love most about fashion as an art form. It has no limits. It is one of the most direct forms of expression.

Here I am wearing a simple denim skirt, a vintage slouchy blouse, black peep toe booties and a black felt hat. This is probably one of my favorite ensembles as it is simple with an edge.

My advice for all the Fashionistas/os this semester is to not listen to people when they tell you there’s no need to dress up. If you want to wear high heels to class, do it! If it takes you an hour to decide what to wear to the movies, own it! Paint the canvas of your body with pride.

Here’s to another #RAD semester!
