STYLE GURU BIO: Gloria Yuen

Hi! I’m Gloria: English major, Philadelphian, Internet lurker, awkward.

In my free time, I write, draw and play music while daydreaming about clothes I wish I owned. I have two functional modes: dramatically cynical and reluctantly optimistic. During the former, I attach myself to my bed and spend hours criticizing bad movies, watching more of those bad movies and praying lethargically for rain storms. During the latter, I’m either typing never-ending fiction, doodling on paper or Photoshop or attempting Chopin or Joe Hisaishi on the piano. When I’m optimistic(ly creative), my brain goes to sleep and my hands start flapping around of their own accord. Before I know it, it’s 6:00 a.m. and the sun has risen outside my window. I am more than occasionally borderline nocturnal.

Overall, I love the bold and the bizarre; feed me creepy animations, psychological thrillers, Argentine tango, etc… I thrive on it. Bold and bizarre is also how I like my fashion. I’m always in search for unique patterns, shapes and clever coordination, so thrift shopping and raiding my parents’ closets are among my favorite pastimes. (Exhibit A above: that’s my mom’s psychedelic button-down, after some experimental tucking). I’m still figuring out what I want to do with my future career, but I’m hoping fashion will be a big part of it. I’m looking forward to this summer!

P.S. If you have thing for Alexander McQueen, Marchesa, Kenzo or Juun.J—and are maybe also a fan of fringe fashion genres like, for example, ’80s goth and cyberpunk—please be my friend. Or Pinterest friend, at the very least. I just need more friends in general.
