STYLE GURU BIO: Gigi Flom

Hello! My name is Gigi Flom and I am a junior at the University of Minnesota in the School of Mass Communication and Journalism, pursuing a major in strategic communication and a minor in leadership. I am currently an intern at a Minneapolis-based ad agency, the newly-elected president of my sorority and a budding lady-entrepreneur.

My personal style is a product of my geographical history. I can thank my midwest roots for my ability to piece together practical elements into wearable ensembles that are functional enough to ensure survival through the harsh Minnesota winters. I spent my first two years of college going to school in Manhattan. It was there and then that my perspective on fashion began to develop into something tangible and informed. I now understand the importance of a balanced silhouette, I am a believer in texture above pattern, I know the equations of layering, I am a self-proclaimed sneaker connoisseur and my wardrobe has become increasingly neutral in hue. For all of this, I thank New York City. Now I’m back in Minnesota, but the residue of the inspiration surging off the NYC streets is something I choose to hold onto.

As I approach the height of winter in Minneapolis, my aim is to style myself in a way which preserves my practicality while simultaneously expressing my fashion identity through the integration of trend and edge. I am not quite a minimalist and certainly not quite a maximalist. I fall somewhere in between—a moderate-alist if you will. I believe you can do a lot with a little and the secret lies within the careful craft of the ensemble.

For this look, I am wearing a variation of what I consider to be my go-to everyday outfit. Black skinny jeans are a staple in any Fashionista’s wardrobe; find similar ones here. On top, I’ve layered a high neck tank underneath a textured sweater. Check out this one to recreate this look. The Kate Spade handbag adds a necessary pop of color to the outfit and my accessories consist of silver hardware which ties the look together. Even my shoes have a little flash of metallic silver, see similar ones here.

I am thrilled to join CollegeFashionista as a Style Guru this semester. For me, fashion is a prime outlet for creative expression. I am excited to have the opportunity to document the evolution of my taste as well as capture the trends I’ve spotted amongst my peers. Here’s to a #RAD semester!
