Greetings Fashionistas/os! My name is Gabrielle Bontempi and I am beyond thrilled to be representing the fashion forward males and females of University of Pittsburgh this semester in my STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK column. As a self-proclaimed fashion freak and lover of all things fashion, I also find myself to be a movie and television trivia expert, nap enthusiast and accessories addict.
As a junior here at Pitt, I am surrounded by fashion inspiration everyday and am so eager to share with you all the different styles I come across on our campus. As a double major in Communications and History of Art and Architecture, I am so excited to take my love of visual arts from an actual canvas to a human canvas. Fashion is such an artistic expression of who a person is and I feel lucky that I will get to venture further into understanding why people make the fashion choices they do and what it says about them.
Growing up just 45 minutes outside of New York City, I was lucky enough to be exposed to one of the fashion capitals of the world from the very start of my life. NYC has always been described as a melting pot and I find my style identity to be incorporated with this institutional idea about NYC. Always mixing and matching different pieces from everywhere, I love to pair unexpected pieces together just like the way so many different people and elements come together to make NYC the melting pot that it is. Whether it be pulling out the stops from my vintage purse collection to mix with a boho Free People frock or pairing my mom’s 1970s cheerleading sweater with a long chiffon skirt, my style strives to intertwine the unexpected. Almost like the peanut butter and chocolate combo, at first it may seem a bit unorthodox, but as soon as you have a taste, it all makes sense!
Well Fashionistas/os, I can’t wait to get to work venturing through the streets of Pittsburgh to find fashion on the forefront. As the new year and the new semester are upon us, I want to begin these fresh starts with a quote from one of my favorite designers, Alexander Wang: “Anyone can get dressed up and glamorous, but it is how people dress in their days off that are the most intriguing.” The everyday style of our fellow Panthers on campus is exactly what I’m excited to discover and I can’t wait to get down to business.
