My name is Gabriela Benitez, and I could not be more excited to be a CollegeFashionista Style Guru this fall. I am currently a senior at American University in Washington, DC majoring in Public Communication with a minor in French Language. I have always loved photography, writing and anything fashion or beauty related. I have no doubt that my internship at CollegeFashionista will be thrilling, fun and rewarding.
I was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico and I am proud to be from such a beautiful island. However, while I define myself by my Hispanic roots, I also consider myself somewhat of a global nomad. I grew up all around the world, starting in Puerto Rico, and then moving to Connecticut, Ecuador, Venezuela, Hong Kong, Spain and Switzerland. While Washington, DC is currently my central hub, Miami is now where my family lives and where my heart resides. Moving around every two years was not always easy, but I wouldn’t have had it any other way. I have been lucky enough to be exposed to a variety of cultures that express style in interesting and differing ways. Now I am exploring the fashion culture in Washington, DC, and I look forward to bringing it to light through CollegeFashionista.
Like anybody else’s style, mine has evolved throughout the years. I went from being a tomboy, wearing checkered vans and graphic tees (thanks to my older brothers), to preppy, to boho with an urban twist. I crave warm weather and dress like a true Miami girl. Maxi skirts, cut offs, bikinis and wedges take up the majority of my wardrobe. Unfortunately, Washington, DC doesn’t offer Miami weather, but I have been enjoying figuring out how to adjust my new and more daring style for the colder seasons. But no matter what the weather conditions may be, I remind myself that it is always better to be overdressed than underdressed.
