Style Guru Bio

Fashion is so much more than the clothes I wear. My name is Erin McKay and I am a senior at the University of Iowa studying Communication Studies. This is my second semester as a Style Guru and I am beyond thrilled to continue sharing the Fashionistas and Fashionistos from my campus! My favorite thing about being a Style Guru is that I get the opportunity to learn about other’s personal style and what fashion means to them. Nothing makes me happier than to see a girl dressed to perfection in the sea of yoga pants and sweatshirts.

I am originally from right outside of Chicago and I grew up venturing downtown on an almost weekly basis. These outings always gave me the opportunity to wear something new, something trendy. I love Chicago because of the eclectic fashion and style that it offers. A simple stroll down Michigan Avenue can consist of everything from a floor-length fur coat and Christian Louboutins, to a destroyed denim jacket and Nike high-tops. The literal street art and walking art of the city leaves me full of new ideas on how to style myself.

I make sure to always surround myself with fashion, by reading Vogue and Nylon cover to cover and making sure to check on what my favorite Fashionistas like Olivia Palermo and Nicole Richie are wearing.

Yves Saint-Laurent once said, “Fashions fade, style is eternal.” My personal style exudes who I am and what I am feeling on a day-to-day basis. I always take risks with what I wear and enjoy seeing other’s reactions to my style. If I had to describe my style in three words it would be edgy, glam and black. I am notorious for wearing all black day in and day out. However I always make sure to put a glam spin on my all black ensembles by throwing on bright lipstick and accessorizing head to toe. I am never without accessories. Some people say I accessorize too much, but to me that is not possible. From bracelets to statement necklaces and my new favorite accessory, clutches, I always make sure to over do it. If someone were to ask me what my favorite item in my closet is I would answer without hesitation, my taupe suede Jeffrey Campbell’s. I shop everywhere from Nordstrom and NASTY GAL to Forever 21 and Target to make my closet a whirlwind of different trends.

I hope you all enjoy reading my weekly posts, which will surely brim with my love for fashion and eternal style!
