STYLE GURU BIO: Emily Oen

May 31st, 2016 at 2:10am

Hello, Fashionistas! My name is Emily, but most people call me “Ems.” I was born and raised in the beautiful state of Minnesota, so if you’re thinking I have the typical Minnesotan accent than you betcha. What I love most about Minnesota, is that I can get a taste of the suburb, city, country and lake life all at once. I’m currently in the suburbs attending Normandale Community College. As a full-time student, I’m very busy pursuing a degree in communication studies through Minnesota State University, Mankato. If we are thinking big goals, I’ve always aspired to be the next Giuliana Rancic hosting E! News, but as my dad would say, “if you’re thinking realistically…” I would love to work in the field of public relations, retail merchandising or perhaps social media marketing. Hey, I’m only 19 years old, so I’ve got some time left to be indecisive.

I find myself most inspired in terms of fashion, and everyday dreams, when I’m in unique coffee shops sipping on a refreshing iced latte. A few of my favorite coffee destinations include: Mugshot Coffee, Quixotic Coffee, Spyhouse Coffee and of course, Starbucks Coffee. I am also a social media junky and always on the search for cool and hip locations for my next Instagram picture.

For my first post here on CollegeFashionista, I wanted to keep the festival season vibes and give you a taste of what a Minnesotan might find herself wearing at one of the many summer bashes to come. I’m all about keeping things comfortable, so I started off with a simple slip-on sneaker from Target, that has small rhinestone embellishments on the toe. I just recently got these frayed, cuffed and denim high-waisted shorts on Poshmark for only eight dollars. Can you say steal? In order to flatter my figure and accentuate my curves, I paired it with a brown braided belt that I purchased from Target. For my top, I hopped on the bodysuit trend and bought this lace, black and halter neck style top from Urban Outfitters. I think this piece adds a sultry and edgy vibe to the look. With festival season in mind, I had to go big with jewelry or go home. The statement for this look is, of course, the silver coin necklace. For a more subtle touch of jewelry that wouldn’t take away from my statement necklace, I kept my gold bar necklace from Etsy that I never leave the house without. I also added a blue stone ring from Forever 21 that added color to this overall dark ensemble, and I finished it off with a black thread cross bracelet.

I should close out this short and sweet bio by letting you all in on how much I adore everything and anything related to fashion. I think the most prominent thing you will notice about me throughout this summer season, is that I don’t have a pinpointed style quite yet. The beauty of being young is that I’m still trying to figure myself out, so I love trying trends from every category.

Always remember, fashion is freedom.
