STYLE GURU BIO: Emily Garcés

Hello Fashionistas/os! This is my first semester as a Style Guru, and I’m so excited to be a part of the team. Not only do I get to write, but I also get to write about what I love. To begin, I’m a junior at Rutgers University majoring in Journalism and Media Studies and minoring in Spanish and Latin America Studies.

When I was younger, my style was basketball shorts and T-shirts. I was a complete tomboy who refused to wear anything girly. As I grew up and become interested in things other than sports, trendy clothing began to attract me. The way I dressed became a way of expressing who I was becoming.

Flipping through fashion magazines and reading the blogs of Camila Coelho and Blair Eadie made me realize the statements that clothes make. Elegant dresses made me exclaim, “Wow!”, and knitted sweaters made me say, “That looks so cozy.” Fashion can make you feel, just like any other form of art. It is more than just fabric, and it takes a keen eye to realize that the simplest accessories are what makes an outfit shine.

I’m eager to contribute to this community of people that share a common interest of what fashion brings to the world. I’ll be able to show the character of this diverse group of Rutgers students by the way they dress and why they put certain pieces together. You can catch all these Rutgers Fashionistas/os through my articles every Monday, so stay tuned.
