STYLE GURU BIO: Emily Ash

Hey fellow fashion lovers! My name is Emily Ash and I’m a journalism and cinema student at the University of Iowa. I’m thrilled to be a part of the Guru Gang this semester! Now let me tell you a little bit about myself.

I have an unhealthy obsession with the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Chicago Cubs. If you ever find yourself in the same vicinity of me watching a game, be sure to steer clear. I am not responsible for whatever I say or do while my Hawks or Cubbies are playing.

I’m obsessed with all things pop culture. You’ll never catch me missing an award show. I’m a self-proclaimed cinephile, and studying cinema in school certainly hasn’t helped at all. I’m an aspiring film critic and someday hope to be a part of The Academy. A girl can dream, right?

I have a deep and personal relationship with food. Cheese in particular. It’s one of the very few constants in my life, and I hope to remain in this strong bond for the remainder of my life.

Besides sports, movies, and food another passion of mine is of course, fashion. I’m always running late, and whenever I’m rushing to get ready to go somewhere with my family, my dad will always say something like, “Em, it’s not a fashion show, we’re just going to dinner!” What does he know right?

I always say “You can never be too overdressed,” and I firmly believe that. So you’ll catch me wearing heels or a skirt while walking through an airport. But I will admit, I—just like everyone else—have those days of tossing my hair into a messy bun (not the cute kind) and throwing on an oversized sweatshirt and sweats when heading to brunch or the grocery store.

While my go-to pieces change fairly often, right now you’ll always catch me in distressed high-waisted jeans. I’ll wear my Calvin Klein bralettes under every outfit. I’ve recently found out that fishnet tights look good with basically anything, especially my velvet Steve Madden slip-ons. I also like incorporating my affinity for pop culture in my style, which you can see with the Kanye lyrics on my T-shirt.

Whenever it comes to fashion, I think you have to be able to just have fun with it and to not always take yourself so seriously. I’ll be the first to admit that sometimes I’ll see the latest trend and immediately say that I wouldn’t be caught dead in it, and a few weeks later have whatever it was in three different colors.

Spending four years at the University of Iowa has contributed to so much of the inspiration I’ve had when it comes to my own style. Here in Iowa City, there’s a crazy amount of diversity, and this contributes to a plethora of individual styles around campus. I’m totally excited to find Hawkeye Fashionistas and Fashionistos and share their RAD styles with you all!
