STYLE GURU BIO: Emaan Akbar

Style Guru Bio

Some people’s memories are jogged by the whiff of a particular scent or smell. Other people reflect on important events in their lives by looking at photographs. But when I want to take a trip down memory lane, I need only open my closet, because I remember the special events of my life through fashion. That means that digging through my closet brings back cherished memories of the milestones in my life, whether it’s the ivory white dress I wore to my high school graduation or the black-on-black ensemble I celebrated my 20th birthday in.

Fashion has the ability to evoke memories and feelings in the same way as a beautiful piece of art. After all, fashion is a form of art that everybody uses to express themselves. No matter the amount of effort behind one’s outfit, what someone wears can reveal a myriad of personal facts about them, from the specifics of their personal taste, to their plans for the day, to how much time they had to get ready in the morning.

My name is Emaan Akbar and I am a junior at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. I was born and raised in this beautiful state and I love calling it my home. My hobbies include anything that does not require physical activity, such as watching TV and movies, updating my Tumblr, reading and, of course, online shopping. I’ve had an interest in fashion since before I could speak—the only tantrums I ever threw were when I was made to wear something I didn’t like, and I’ve never shied away from taking risks or standing out when it comes to my clothing. My only priority when dressing is that I feel good about what I’m wearing. My personal style icons include Olivia Palermo for her ability to consistently look put-together and on-trend, Tilda Swinton for her irreverence on the red carpet and entrepreneur Pernia Qureshi for effortlessly blending an Eastern and Western aesthetic.

I am absolutely thrilled to have the opportunity to document student style as a Style Guru this summer. I had to wear a uniform to school everyday from first grade to my senior year of high school, so I relish my newfound ability as a college student to check out what other people are wearing, and now I get to write about the reasoning behind people’s sartorial choices for the WHAT TO WEAR column. I can’t wait to get started and hope all of you Fashionistas and Fashionistos are as excited as I am for what’s to come this summer!
