Menswear has not transformed drastically as much as womenswear in terms of silhouette, so options are limited. However, Cavalera has turned a classic look into a bold statement in their 2015-2016 spring/summer mens runway. They paired the simplistic silhouette known in menswear with bold and drastic prints that guarantees more than a handful of looks. My outfit today is a simplistic version of this, taking classic pieces such as my suede derby shoes as well as my cuffed medium washed jeans that were thrown together with a button-down with a vibrant white/green pattern.

As with most of my outfits, I try to incorporate a punk element no matter how subtle it is in the entirety of the look. I take inspiration from people such as Russell Brand, Lenny Kravitz, Marilyn Manson and Noel Fielding who all have a talent for incorporating a sense of punk into most, if not all, of their looks. In this look, I decided to go with a simple jewelry concept as to not distract too much from the print of the shirt. I included a faux septum piercing, layered chains and a black metal band along with my neutral based outfit to act as a canvas for the button-down, as it was the main piece I was attempting to show the importance of.

Fashion excites me as it is something that changes constantly; in this industry you can be on top of current trends today and two seasons behind tomorrow. There are endless ways to transform looks as you can play with silhouette, color, fabric and prints to develop a concept that fits your own interests, but also holds a piece of history as fashion reflects historical milestones of the time period it was created in. This realization of the endless possibilities and societal influence that goes into a single industry is what drove me to attend a university with a major in Fashion Design.

I’m excited to work as a Style Guru because I hope to showcase the variety of fashion not only in terms of diversity in clothing or accessories, but the diversity of the people that wear them.
