My name is Cherise and I am a Fashion Design major at Washington University in St. Louis. Enamored with everything fashion, I have known for years that I have wanted to be a designer. After all, what better way to indulge oneself in the fashion world than to create the clothes that keeps the world so chic? With an unabashed love for the arts, from music to dance to painting, fashion tops my list as the most expressive art form. Not only is it performed by everyone, but it is the one art form where you don’t have to worry about living up to anyone’s expectations but your own. There’s no being off-key or worrying about sloppy line work — the only requirement is being you. Whether you’re the shy kid in the corner or the funky hipster, fashion is a way for you to express a side of yourself that words simply cannot do justice.
My style, for instance, is prim and proper with a slight edge. While I adore preppy cardigans and bow accessories, DIY ripped jeans, patterned tights and oversized tops are also among my closet staples. My closet provides the perfect peek into my personality: cheerful and polished, yet a little eccentric. I’m also an avid believer that there is no such thing as too much color. Whether it’s a simple accessory such as red lip-shaped earrings or a statement piece like a pair of lemon yellow jeans, I think every outfit can be made that much better with even the teensiest hint of color.
As a Style Guru at WashU, I will definitely be on the lookout for bold prints, color mixing and of course, impeccable shoes. An opportunity to seek out both Fashionistas AND Fashionistos leaves me beyond enthused to write for the new What To Wear column. From loafers and bow ties to pumps and scarves, the WashU fashion culture in 2013 is destined for ultimate fabulosity!
