Hi there, I’m Catherine Iobst! The exclamation point is very much so necessary because I am beyond excited to be Ursinus College’s first very own Style Guru. Go Bears! I honestly cannot believe I’m saying this, but I am a senior majoring in English with a minor in Media and Communication Studies. With three years’ worth of experience wandering around the lush lawns and winding pathways of my beloved campus I have noticed that though the population of UC is small there is no shortage of Fashionistas/os. It’s all about quality not quantity here in Collegeville, Pennsylvania. This semester, I am looking forward to capturing UC’s eclectic style and eager to see what eye-catching ensembles come my way.
Fashion isn’t just about wearing the latest trend. It is a form of self-expression and not to mention it’s personal art. Fashion is about being yourself and owning your personality. You decide what you want to wear and how you want to wear it and by doing so you create an image.
Growing up I always prided myself as being an artsy, creative kind of girl. Whether I was making seashell incrusted sand sculptures at the Jersey Shore or cutting up old magazines for collages, I was always up to something crafty. My latest and greatest artistic endeavors took place this past spring in Florence, Italy. I learned how to oil paint and toured the museums of Florence with my Renaissance art history class while simultaneously consuming copious amounts of hazelnut gelato. I’d like to think that my appreciation of art rationalizes why my closet and dresser overflows. I believe fashion is a creative outlet accessible to us all. It provides a unique opportunity for self-exploration and a chance for us to get better acquainted with ourselves.
My personal style is evolving but I like to describe it as classic with some quirks. Some treasures of my closet include my Hunter Boots, J.Crew chambray button-down, the scarves I acquired from my world travels and, of course, trusty pearl earrings. I also enjoy playing with colors, patterns and textures in my outfits. Check out the way I paired this woven basket bag with the sleek silhouette of this dress. I don’t have to look very far for style icon inspiration because my mother and two younger sisters (sorry dad) all execute their looks with ease and confidence. Lately, I’ve also been following Jennifer Aniston for her elegant simplicity and crisp relaxed looks. But, enough about me! I can’t wait to hear from all you other Fashionista/os this semester!
