My name is Cassandra Calcaterra and I am beyond thrilled to have the opportunity to intern as a Style Guru for CollegeFashionista. I am currently a senior at the University of Dayton with a major in public relations and a minor in marketing. I will be writing WHAT TO WEAR articles in which I will reflect on fashionable students and give you style advice on how to incorporate a mirrored image for every fall occasion.
Fashion is a lifestyle I discovered at a very young age. I’d wander the halls of my grandmother’s estate in search of hand-tailored vintage apparel, custom designed jewels and classic antiqued accessories. As I’ve developed my own style, I’ve made sure to incorporate some of these timeless pieces into my own collection. Pictured is a 1980s Gloria Vanderbilt denim skirt, a piece I absolutely adore to wear in honor of my grandmother. A woman of impeccable taste is never forgotten, so I take pride in letting her extravagant pieces live on through my generation.
My personal style is a combination of classic and vintage pieces. Usually, my palette consists of crème, beige, tan, ivory and white in every season. Occasionally, you’ll find me channeling my inner Carrie Bradshaw when pairing a perfectly detailed dress with an exceptional jacket or unforgettable pumps. The only everyday wear I own is a square-cut emerald stone on my right hand that adds a glisten of sparkle to every eye it catches. I love to incorporate a touch of pizazz through classic shoes or accessories, depending on my mood for the evening.
Fashion is a way of life and not a day goes by that I don’t admire a piece of clothing from a stranger’s closet. I believe less is more and comfort takes place in look rather than feel. If you look the part and feel comfortable, well, you’ve discovered the ultimate secret. I find inspiration through a selection of fabulous models and designers including Michael Kors, Free People, Nicole Richie, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen and Kate Moss. I especially love to support the underdogs of the fashion industry; there is nothing more fulfilling than a unique piece from a local designer or chic boutique in town.
My ultimate style tip for readers: be confident in the skin you’re in, but more importantly express that confidence by creating your own look. To all the over-thinkers out there, do yourself a favor and throw on the dress you’ve been waiting to wear all week. Feel good today instead of six months from now when you “hope” it’ll look better. Style is always best when paired with confidence.
