STYLE GURU BIO: Carmen Collins

Hello Fashionistas/os! I’m Carmen Collins, a rising sophomore at The George Washington University in Washington, D.C.

Currently a journalism major, I love wearing different looks that are inspired by runway shows, street wear and fashion bloggers. These include looking at pictures from Vogue and Teen Vogue, my friends (and random people on the street who are slaying the fashion game!) and local D.C. bloggers such as Lacey Faeh.

For me, it’s crucial to not only look at international brands, but the smaller, local brands and bloggers that show that they have really good taste. It’s always a good idea to support your local fashion designers, bloggers and stores. Your local stores and Fashionistas/os could be the next major fashion house and designer.

Since college is so expensive and fashion is as well, I look at current fashion trends and try to translate it to a college student budget. By looking at runway shows and then at more budget friendly stores such as Forever 21 to copy the runway look, I can look stylish without breaking bank.

My personal style is laid-back, but with a cool kid vibe. Depending on my mood, my outfits can be preppy or boho with a casual elegance. At George Washington University, it’s important to dress well, even going to class.

In this look, I’m wearing a jacket with fringe, suede ankle booties and light wash jeans. Also, the clear lace blouse with a black bralette lends a sexy yet casual edge to the outfit. The hat helps gives a rugged feel, showcasing a boho vibe. My inspiration for this look was looking at what people were wearing at musical festivals such as Coachella.
