It’s still hard for me to believe that the first semester of my freshman year in college flew by so quickly. Yet, during that time I learned a few lessons. One of them being, the stereotype that all college students are always donned in sweatpants is not entirely true. I have found some amazing Fashionistas/os around campus that are pushing the envelope, setting new trends and expressing themselves to the fullest through their clothing. This realization has inspired me to try several looks that I did not during high school. And to be honest, seeing so many well-dressed people motivates me to not spend too much time in my lazy attire. Now, what’s even harder for me to believe is that I have the opportunity to share some of these inspiring people with you all!
My name is Cameron Jackson and I am a Strategic Communications major at Elon University. I was never very gifted in performance art or most types of visual art. So, I love that CollegeFashionista provides a platform to do two of my favorite things that give me a creative release: photography and writing.
As far as fashion goes, my passion for this area was probably always deep inside somewhere, but I never truly expressed it in my younger years. Growing up, I was always awkwardly taller than everyone else. So, I often found myself wearing ill-fitting pants or pieces made for a much older person. Also, sports used to be a big part of my focus and there wasn’t much need to get dressed up in my free time. Neither of those affect me anymore, so I figured now is the perfect time to take more risks in how I express myself through fashion. After all, I promised myself that my motto for college would be one of my favorite quotes by Neale Donald Walsch, “Life begins at the end of your comfort zone.” Well, I guess until I work up the nerve, at least I’ll develop my eye for groundbreaking trends and the stylish people around me.
Speaking of groundbreaking, a Fashionista who embodies everything I love about taking risks is Solange Knowles. Her love for mixing busy prints and vibrant colors is what sets her apart. I also admire her affinity for unique silhouettes and cuts of clothing. She has truly reinvented herself from just a few years ago and has established an identity of her own. Seeing someone with such an eclectic style inspires me to want to take more chances.
Outside of pushing myself to try new trends, my most eminent challenge for this semester will be to write for LET’S HEAR IT FOR THE BOYS. I love that writing about men’s fashion will give me a chance to immerse myself in an area that I have not yet fully explored. I’m so excited to expose all of you to the very dapper men of Elon. Stay tuned every Tuesday!
