STYLE GURU BIO: Brooke McKenzie Mullin

Hey Fashionista/os, I’m Brooke Mullin and I just finished my freshman year of college at Michigan State. I plan to graduate and become the next Carrie Bradshaw but unfortunately that’s not a major, so I’ll have to settle with a degree in business while dabbling in some communications classes. Realistically, I hope to become a retail buyer, but if God willed it I would say landing a gig at Vogue would be the dream. I’m pretty close to legally blind without contacts, but I have 20/20 vision when it comes to style. Sleeping before 2:00 a.m. is impossible. I prefer a rainy day over any day. I’m like a kid in a candy store in Sephora. The ’50s was a great decade (@JamesDean). Black and white movies are under appreciated. I also have a bad habit of looking up every lyric to every song I listen to.

My style motto is inspired by the fashion icons themselves: “Carry yourself like Audrey (Hepburn), take risks like Madonna, be edgy like Debbie (Harry) and have the confidence of Marilyn (Monroe, duh).” I hope to portray this in my style to come in future posts. You will notice I add black to about 90 percent of anything I wear. Black is my favorite color because it’s classy and versatile. Johnny Cash only wore black for a reason.

I wouldn’t consider myself grounded to a certain look, as my style ranges from dresses and heels to edgy rock band T-shirts. I’m guilty of sporting the “just rolled out of bed” look when I overslept and am running to class for clicker points. Oops. I’m a fool for my rock bands and rap artists (diverse, I know). I spend more time than anyone ever should updating my Spotify playlists and hunting down that leaked link to Drake’s newest release. Therefore I hold a special place in my heart, and bank account, for a pair of Yeezys to pair with oversized Supreme shirts. I am a concert junkie and if I had it my way I’d concert travel the rest of my life. (Yay for future concert outfit posts!).

With any look I add edge. Going the flirty/girly route in the look above, I paired a white off-the-shoulder blouse with a layered metal choker to add my personal edge. I’m only 5’2—I may or may not be rounding up—and heavily dependent on a solid pair of heels, so I paired the look with my favorite black and nude peep toes. A fitted pair of dark wash jeans and a black leather tote can dress up your look and add a classy touch.

I emphasize to everyone that you should add your own style to everything you wear, you look your best in what you can own and be comfortable in. So with that being said, I’ll end with some wise words from Audrey Hepburn: “Life is a party. Dress like it.”
