Hello Fashionistas/os! My name is Beverly Thomas and I am a senior majoring in marketing at Temple University in Philadelphia, where I was born and raised. I’m so excited to join the CollegeFashionista team as a Style Guru! I will be writing for LET’S HEAR IT FOR THE BOYS this fall semester, where I will be sharing with you the latest fashions that our male students have to offer. As it so happens, the college campuses in Philadelphia are where the most fashionable people tend to congregate. Because Temple’s campus is so ethnically and culturally diverse, I know that this experience will greatly expose me to some of the most individualistic fashions that our historical city has to offer!
Unlike most Fashionistas, my interest in fashion didn’t manifest itself until the later portion of my 21-years of life. I was unaware of my passion for fashion until I was a freshman at the Pennsylvania State University (I transferred to Temple after my sophomore year), where I began modeling. I had always read teen fashion magazines in high school, but I would not have called my hobby a passion. Participating in fashion shows gave me a new type of energy and new fashion-oriented career aspirations. I also began frequently styling and restyling different articles of clothing in my closet to familiarize myself with which types of pieces most complimented other pieces – how I acquired my hobby for styling and personal shopping. Throughout the following summer and sophomore year, I increased my activity and involvement in fashion shows, from being a model to being a member of the event coordinating team. I had to surround myself in it; I wanted to learn, live and breathe fashion.
During my time at Penn State, I became a “recessionista.” My funds were limited as well were my fashion options, until I discovered the joys and wonders of thrift shopping or “thrifting” as we Fashionistas call it. I discovered vintage fashions of different styles and eras for the lowest prices in the area, making sure I washed everything! I carried my new hobby back to Philadelphia with me, where there happen to be dozens of thrift stores. “Honey, I’m home!”
My style would be described as vintage and eclectic with a classic or modern twist. I love dressing up and using clothing to display different facets of my personality – how I am dressed depends on my mood. On the days that I happen to feel fierce, you might see some animal prints or leather in my ensemble. When I am feeling especially fashionable, I might experiment with a runway look just to attend class. Even on rainy days, I still strive for fashionable looks.
I’m thrilled to write for LET’S HEAR IT FOR THE BOYS because I am not very experienced with men’s fashion. I hope to learn so much from this experience and to give our readers the best of Temple’s Fashionistos for style inspiration. I heard menswear is making a comeback, ladies…
