Hello, fellow Fashionista/os! I’m Astrid Hyland, a junior Fashion Marketing and Management major at SCAD, and I’m so excited to be a part of CollegeFashionista and your week!
When I was a little girl, I used to covet my mother’s fashion magazines, try on all of her jewelry or traipse around the house in my grandmother’s heels. But coming from a small Kansas town where function outweighs fashion was a little tricky. While my friends wanted to be teachers or Olympic equestrian riders, I wanted to be Cher Horowitz, Carrie Bradshaw or Elle Woods. These were strong and stylish women who took the road less traveled and made their dreams come true. Like my favorite poem says, “and that made all the difference.”
Although I’ve loved fashion my whole life, my path has taken a few twists and turns, from indecision as to where I was going to attend school, to changing my major from Interior Design to Fashion Marketing & Management. I should have known my freshman year when I made more comments regarding what women were wearing than the beautiful architecture of the city, where my heart truly lay.
Savannah is one of the most beautiful cities in the United States and the fashion of SCAD is forceful. These girls take risks. Rain or shine, SCAD girls go out in their best to show the world that the streets are their runway, passers-by are their audience and they mean business.
As far as my own personal style goes, I’d like to think that I was a nice mix between the classic elegance of Blair Waldorf and flirty, fun Serena van der Woodsen. So Gossip Girl, I know.
Every week, I’ll be sharing advice on WHAT TO WEAR on different occasions. Every day is an occasion to look fabulous. Whether you’re out at the library to study for a big test, working out at the gym (or the park!) or even just a study date with friends, I’ll be watching! As Alexander Wang says, “Anyone can get dressed up and glamorous, but it is how people dress in their days off that are the most intriguing.”
