Pull out your sandals, swimsuits and short shorts, beloved Fashionistas, because it is officially summer! Ashley Minyard here, back for another semester at CollegeFashionista and I can’t wait for what it has in store. Summer is my personal favorite time for fashion and I’m ready to dig up the hottest trends and fill you in on how to wear them with a STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK post every Monday!
I’m a journalism student at Indiana University, minoring in apparel merchandising and studio art. I pretty much live and breathe creativity, which is what really draws me to fashion. Writing for CollegeFashionista has opened my eyes to the possibilities and has really put me in touch with my fellow fashionable students. Who knew so much style could be found in Indiana?
Being around so many different tastes and wardrobes has made my personal style very diverse. One day I could be wearing black from head to toe with bold metal accessories. On another, I could be adorned in pastels, girly jewelry and hair bows. My style really depends on my mood, but you’ll never catch me dead wearing sweats in public (except for that all-nighter finals week, but I try to block that out of my memory). If you show me anything with a pleasant fabric, sassy pattern or a drape that flows, I’ll just melt. My wrists are constantly filled with bracelets and my ears have more jewelry than my mother approves of, but I like to think I rock the style. What it all boils down to is what makes me happy! If I don’t look good, I don’t feel good, so my wardrobe is taken very seriously (but not too seriously).
I have a theory that fashion is one of the only art forms in which everyone in the world contributes. No matter who you are or what you do, you wake up every morning and choose something to wear. That something had to come from a store, which you chose to shop at and you decided that the particular garment you purchased was the right one for you. We all contribute to the industry, we all go out in public with whatever we decide is our personal style and we all inspire those around us, no matter how unintentional it is. Whether you are born for the runway or anti-fashion, your contribution matters. I feel that I was born into this world to smooth out the rough spots — melding the various aspects and sects of the fashion universe together and creating syzygy. The planets are aligning and so are our wardrobe sensibilities, so let us show them off!
