STYLE GURU BIO: Anneke Charnley

Hello Fashionistas/os! First, I would like to start off with introducing myself by tackling the debate that is my lovely name.

Your name is your identity and like many would assume, my identity is mispronounced most of the time. My name is Anneke, pronounced like Annika or Onika, and although it is difficult and was the center of a debate in my eigth grade math class, I would not change it for the world. I was named after one of my favorite fashion inspirations, my grandmother. Unfortunately, my grandmother passed away from ovarian cancer before I could meet her, but her spirit lives on through the photographs hanging from the walls in my house. My grandmother would model in her free time and would always have very unique clothing choices mixing American and European styles together. Now, I am attempting to carry on her love of fashion with modern trends.

Currently, I am a junior at the University of Pittsburgh studying biology on the pre-medicine track. Yes, I am a lab geek who rocks safety glasses and a lab coat at least twice a week but that does not mean that you have to sacrifice fashion, as long as it includes long pants and closed toed shoes.

My fashion sense is geared around one main thing: comfort. No, you do not have to “bum it” by wearing sweats, a white T-shirt and styling your hair in a messy bun, but you should feel confident and comfortable in your outfit all day. A simple pair of jeggings always makes my day better by keeping me comfortable but also looking nice during that early eight a.m. class.

This outfit was inspired by my sister’s unique fashion sense. She is all about mixing and matching different articles of clothing that may not usually be put together. Although it may look like your standard top tucked into some high-waisted shorts look, the twist is that the “top” is actually a simple straight dress with a bit of white lace. Pairing the dress with some black high-waisted shorts provided a more relaxed look. I chose to pair this outfit with my Calvin Klein high tops that provide another dimension of flare to the outfit to make it more interesting. In terms of accessories, I am not a huge accessories buff. I prefer to keep it simple with my Pandora charm bracelet and I will never be seen without a black hair tie around my wrist, since the wind is starting to pick up as fall approaches.

Please feel free to connect with me on social media through my Instagram, Facebook or Twitter. I would love the opportunity to connect with you! I am extremely excited for the opportunity of being a style guru for CollegeFashionista this semester and I cannot wait to write for all of you!
