Happy one-more-day-until-Friday everyone! My name is Anna Mathias. I am currently a freshman majoring in public relations and minoring in fashion merchandising at University of South Carolina. I am thrilled to become a part of the CollegeFashionista Style Guru team!
In the wise words of Oscar Wilde, “You can never be overdressed or overeducated.” Don’t get me wrong, USC has an abundance of Fashionistas/os but as I walk across campus and make my way though the sea of Nike shorts and oversized T-shirts I am usually quite tempted to yell out this quote. This specific look, a look of general laziness, is what I want to encourage the students of USC to stray away from during the New Year and second semester (no, replacing your gym shorts with leggings does not count). Have the courage to take a risk, be different and create your own individual style. To me, individuality and creativity is exactly what fashion is all about.
My personal style began to form when I attended Charleston County School of the Arts. During my high school years I learned that, through playing the cello, music was not the only form of expression I could use. I quickly discovered fashion could make just as much of a statement as a beautiful melody or an intricate painting. As cliché as it sounds, I believe clothing is wearable art. I’ve kept this mindset with me as I entered college. Making a statement does not necessarily mean trying to recreate every trend that is displayed in the latest issue of Vogue. It means being able to express who you are through what you wear. Fashion is all about individuality and I strive to depict this through my own everyday style.
My favorite outfits always include sequins, an oversized watch, shoes that make me the height of an average human being instead of 5’1″ and lots of gold and black. Whether it is the chaos of leather bracelets on my left wrist that I have refused to take off since the 8th grade (yes, my tan line is horrible) or my over-the-top obsession with anything leopard print; I can say that my style is and will always be my own.
I cannot wait to start sharing my fashion finds! Gamecocks, do not even think about leaving your dorm without dressing to impress! Let’s show everyone that we’ve got a reason to be “cocky!”
