Hi Fashionita/os! My name is Anna Mathias, and I am a junior majoring in Public Relations and minoring in Fashion Merchandising at the University of South Carolina. I am thrilled to be coming back for my sixth—that’s right, I said sixth—semester as a Style Guru for CollegeFashionista! I can’t believe it’s been two years since I started. Being part of the CollegeFashionista team has been incredible and I cannot wait for this semester of street style and new beginnings for the site.
“One belongs to New York instantly, one belongs to it as much in five minutes as in five years,” Tom Wolfe once said. I had the privilege of instantly belonging to NYC. This summer, I interned for Karla Otto, one of the world’s leading fashion public relations firms, and CollegeFashionista. I FINALLY got to meet Amy and Sammy (Melissa, I hope I’ll meet you soon!). If you haven’t figured it out by now, they’re some of the most inspiring and genuine bosses and role models. Each day in both of the offices I worked in taught me more than I could have ever imagined going in. I miss The Big Apple. I miss how easy it was—after downloading HopStop, of course—to catch the train to work. I miss how I could go shopping at all hours of the day or night. I don’t miss the rat that somehow managed to get into my kitchen on the fifth floor, but the concrete jungle is like no other. It’s the most inspiring and challenging place. Probably needless to say, but the Fashionista/os were absolutely incredible. I was in awe every single day just walking around. The streets of NYC are truly a public runway. Hopefully, I’ll be back! Until then, I plan to bring this sense of fearless fashion to the South. USC, it’s time to show me what you’ve got!
As for my style, it’s constantly evolving. I like the idea of never really having to pick just one style. Personal style is all about expressing who you are by what you wear. No one can tell you who you are; therefore what you wear should be entirely up to what you feel comfortable in. Pretty much every day you can expect me to be drinking ice coffee (does that count as an accessory?), wearing a pair of booties, dark red lipstick and lots of black. In the wise words of Neimen Marcus, “Women who wear black lead colorful lives.” I could not agree more.
I am so excited for my sixth semester of style to get started! I’m back in Gamecock country. I can’t wait to showcase why our school’s got a reason to be “cocky” about what we wear!
