STYLE GURU BIO: Anna Mathias

Style Guru Bio

Greetings, loved ones! (I know, I started my bio out with Snoop Dogg lyrics…again. Third times a charm?) My name is Anna Mathias and I am a sophomore majoring in Public Relations and minoring in Fashion Merchandising at the University of South Carolina. I am so excited to be returning for my fourth semester as a Style Guru for CollegeFashionista! Being part of the College Fashionista team for over a year has been incredible. New Style Gurus get ready. You will find yourself in a constant state of uncomfortable eye contact, as you are looking for someone in a great outfit. You will also have those days of literally running after a stranger to get a perfect shot. Through all of the awkward moments with possible Fashionistas and Fashionistos, I’ve learned so much and wouldn’t have it any other way. I can’t wait to get this semester of style started!

Gianni Versace stated, ”Don’t make fashion own you, but you decide what you are, what you want to express by the way you dress and the way you live.” This impeccably talented designer could not have been more correct. Style should not strictly be dictated by what is shown in the latest issue of Vogue. To me, personal style is more important than following every new trend. The clothes we choose to wear convey to the world who we are and who we want to be. Your personal style should be true to you. Don’t be afraid to be unique. In the wise words of another amazing avant-garde designer, Alexander McQueen, “It’s a new era in fashion—there are no rules.”

The University of South Carolina is home to over 30,000 students. Standing out on a campus with thousands of students is never and easy task. Dressing like everyone else causes you to become a part of this sea of uniformity I often see on a day-to-day basis. College is the perfect opportunity to take complete advantage of your education, as well as express your creativity and personality through what you wear. Embrace your quirkiness and let that influence your style. I promise, putting a little bit of effort into what you wear will go a long way. This spring, I am looking for Fashionista/os that aren’t afraid to rebel from the norm of the rest of their peers.

As for my style, it’s all about contrasts. There’s a perfect combination of edgy, a little grungy and feminine that I most often find myself wearing. Pretty much every day you can expect me to wear an oversized watch, shoes that make me the height of an average human instead of 5’1” and lots of black.

I cannot wait to get this semester started and start sharing my fashion finds! Gamecocks, let’s show everyone that our school isn’t just good at football and partying—sorry mom. The University of South Carolina has many reasons to be “cocky” and stylish students should be one of them! Look for my STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK post every Monday!
