Greetings loved ones—yes, I did just quote Snoop Dogg’s lyrics to “California Girls” to start off a post. My name is Anna Mathias and I am a rising sophomore majoring in Public Relations and minoring in Fashion Merchandising at the University of South Carolina. I am ecstatic to be returning as a Style Guru for the summer. Being part of the CollegeFashionista team has been such a great experience so far and I can’t wait to continue writing and taking photos.
Iris Apfel once said, “When you don’t dress like everyone else, you don’t have to think like everyone else.” In my opinion, this flamboyant, quirky woman could not be more right. Her words empower me not to be afraid of fashion but to embrace it. Many times people are just simply scared to take risks with their clothing and that shouldn’t be the case. Fashion should be fun. It also should be unique and true to who you are. Dressing like everyone else causes you to blend into a crowd. I believe that fashion should make you stand out. Making a statement does not necessarily mean trying to recreate every trend that is displayed in the latest issue of Vogue. It means being able to express who you are through what you wear.
Attending the University of South Carolina has solidified this belief for me. I constantly walk to class in a sea of Nike shorts. Those who follow my posts, I promise this is the last time I will bring this up. But honestly, it still blows my mind that college pretty much has a dress code that was actually created by the students. This summer, I will further strive to make posts to show everyone that embracing your own style is okay and should be applauded, not hidden behind a pair of monogramed running shorts.
As for my style, it’s all about contrasts. I love that perfect combination of a girlie but super edgy outfit. It makes an ensemble interesting. Pretty much everyday you can expect me to wear an oversized watch, shoes that make me the height of an average human instead of 5’1” and lots of black—probably too much black. But hey, in the wise words of Neiman Marcus, “Women who wear black lead colorful lives.”
I could not be more excited about this summer. So Fashionistas and Fashionistos, it’s time to show me what you’ve got. Look for my weekly WHAT TO WEAR post every Thursday!
