Greetings, loved ones! (I thought my previous STYLE GURU BIO would be the last time I would quote Snoop Dogg for a post. I was wrong. What better way to say hello than “California Girls” lyrics?) My name is Anna Mathias and I am a sophomore majoring in Public Relations and minoring in Fashion Merchandising at the University of South Carolina. I am thrilled to be returning to CollegeFashionista as USC’s Head Style Guru! Being part of the CollegeFashionista team has been an incredible experience so far. I can’t wait to get this semester of style started!
Coco Chanel once said, “Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening.” I could not agree with this quote more. Fashion is more than just the garments that hang in our closets. It’s a part of everyone’s everyday life even if they don’t want to admit it. The clothes we choose to wear convey to the world who we are and who we want to be. To me, personal style is more important than following every trend that is displayed in the latest issue of Vogue. Your style should be true to you. Don’t be afraid to be unique. Dressing like everyone else causes you to blend into a crowd.
This will be my second year at the University of South Carolina. By now, I have learned that there is always something to do. Whether it is a football game, Fashion Board meeting (shameless shout out to an AWESOME club on campus) or the random activities always happening on Greene Street, you can be sure that you’ll never be bored. With so much going on, there are reasons to dress your best. Yes, I am talking to every single girl who is not at the gym and is wearing a pair of running shorts right now. Embracing your own style should be praised! I promise people do take notice if you put even just a little bit of effort into your appearance. This fall I will be on the lookout for Fashionista/os that dare to be different from their peers.
As for my style, it’s all about contrasts. There’s a perfect combination of super edgy and girly that I most often find myself wearing. Pretty much every day you can expect me to wear an oversized watch, shoes that make me the height of an average human instead of 5’1” and lots of black.
I am so excited for what’s to come this fall. Gamecocks, let’s show everyone in the fashion world that we’ve got a reason to be “cocky!” Look for my STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK post every Monday!
