Hello, fellow Fashionistas! My name is Anna Coke and I am (as of a few weeks ago) a junior at the University of Kentucky, where I am majoring in Merchandising, Apparel and Textiles and minoring in Art Studio. I am thrilled to say that I am beginning my second semester as a Style Guru for CollegeFashionista.
The last two years of college have been a roller coaster to say the least. After transferring from art school to a state school, my entire life was turned upside-down. When I moved, I felt completely lost and devoid of any and all inspiration. Enter: CollegeFashionista. I applied to be a Style Guru on a whim, not expecting anything of it. Little did I know, it would change my outlook on everything.
I’m not going to lie, the first few weeks of being a Style Guru were rough for me. I am terribly shy, and walking up to strangers out of the blue was terrifying to put it mildly. Gradually though, it became easier. And then, it became fun! I started to look forward to finding Fashionista/os on campus: scoping out cute outfits was a blast (albeit a little creepy), and nothing compared to the feeling of making someone’s day. On top of that, I got to write about my greatest passion: fashion!
Through CollegeFashionista, I have slowly come to love where I am. Being a Style Guru has forced me to look around and realize how many unique, creative people attend the University of Kentucky – something I probably never would have noticed otherwise. I truly learned to notice and appreciate the different ways that others show their personality, and I know that valuable lesson is one that I will carry with me forever.
Words cannot express how thankful I am for all the experience I gained as a Style Guru my first semester; however, it’s time for something new. This summer I will be writing for the STYLE GURU STYLE category, which is focused on my own outfits as inspired by recent runway shows. Though I love photographing the style of others, I am so excited for this opportunity to continue the perpetual evolution of my style. Whether I’m figuring out how to adapt looks from Mary Katrantzou into an everyday outfit or taking inspiration from Badgley Mischka to make a stunning, elegant ensemble of my own, I know that I will be growing every day. Through this column, I want to not only learn more about the current world of fashion, but inspire others to do so as well. And hopefully, in the process, I will break out of my uniform of black on black on black and wander into a fabulous world where red shoes aren’t the only color in my outfit.
